Target: Hello "Goodbuy"
Target's new ad, which puns Beatles' lyrics into "Hello, Goodbuy", is causing a commotion—people either laud it as brilliance or decry it as an unclever and banal misstep. Decide for yourself:The ad on YouTube

Regardless of whether or not people agree on the use of the song or the spelling of "goodbye/goodbuy", the ad works. People are talking about Target. And really that's the whole point.
Even those who find it insulting or trivial can not call it unclever. The mere fact that people are debating the wit and the integrity of the commercial and therefore engaging others to view it, is...clever.
It's true that no publicity is bad. Still, it's sad that the creatives working on this couldn't come up with something original. The "Say Hello to a Goodbuy" slogan was used for at least a decade by Shopko, a competitor of Target who's headquartered about a 4 hour drive from Minneapolis where Target is based.
Target's is updated, but certainly not new.
I am the biggest Beatles fan around but I have to admit that the different variations of the song are quite impressive. Never heard of Shopko here on the left coast.
Very interesting indeed—I'd love to know more about Shopko. Meanwhile, I've updated the link (the previous YouTube video to the ad had been removed).
